How to prepare for your first Mallo Call
시작이 반이다.
(Shi-jag-i Ban-i-da)
This is a Korean saying that means "The start is half the journey". So if you're reading this guide, I want to start off by congratulating you in your first step in having a Mallo Call.
You may be a fresh learner ready to kick things off, or you may already have some learning experiences first. Regardless of which level you are at, this guide will make sure that you will be fully prepared for your first Mallo Call so that you can make the most out of the 15 minutes! Here's a list of both technical and non-technical to-do's:
1. Download Skype
To provide you with improving quality, Mallo Calls take place over Skype. You will have to provide your Skype ID (Skype name) when you book your first class, so make sure that you have Skype on your phone.

After you've downloaded and created a Skype Account, make sure to take note of your Skype name as you will be asked to provide this information during booking.
If you're preparing for your first FREE call, don't worry - you don't need to do this yet.
2. Download KakaoTalk (Optional)
KakaoTalk is a locally-leading chat app - to the point that using this app is one of the many ways to immerse yourself in Korean culture. For that reason, we mainly provide support on our KakaoTalk channel, and downloading the app and following our channel will be an easy way for you to reach out to us if you have any issues learning with Mallo.
KakaoTalk is also the platform that we use to provide our chat service - Mallo Chat. If you're interested in purchasing a package, check out our pricing page.

3. Look back at what you've learned
If you have some experience learning Korean, think about what you have learned so far. More importantly, understand what you are good at, and what you could improve on. Figuring this out will be the objective of your first call so that you can plan your future calls better.
If you're unsure or if you're a new learner, our free class should help you understand your learning goals better. Reserve a free class now!
We also provide growth checks for students enrolled in our program - check our pricing for more details.
4. Think about what you want to learn
There are many ways to learn a language - one might want to nail down the technical grammar concepts, and one might simply want to be able to converse casually with a close-to-native pronunciation.
Ask yourself this question: why do you want to learn Korean? In other words, what is your end goal? Give yourself a minute to think about this, and you'll know exactly what you want to learn.
A good tip is to share this with your tutor in advance so that your tutor can plan the calls according to your own goals.
5. Create a study plan
Now that you know what you've learned so far and how you want to continue your learning journey, the next step is to create your own study plan. When you create a plan, refer to this checklist:
- It has a good balance of interactive study and self-learning
- It's not overachieving - your priority is to stay consistent
- It aligns with your goals
Our 15-minute calls are a perfect way to supplement your self-learning - you can practice what you've learned on your own on your calls, or review what you've learned in your calls through self-research! Learn more about how our packages can fit right into your study plan on our pricing page.
That's it! You're now ready, both technically and mentally, to get on your first call.
